Nestlé unit rolls out 10 biofuel trucks in Dubai

A unit of food and drink giant, Nestlé, has rolled out biofuel trucks in Dubai to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations.

The company hopes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10% between 2014 and 2020.

As part of the programme, Nestlé Waters is collaborating with Neutral Fuels to use a blend of fossil diesel (80%) and biodiesel (20%), produced from used cooking oil.

Neutral Fuels collects used cooking oil from across the UAE to generate its biodiesel. 10 of Nestlé Waters´ trucks are using the fuel during the initial testing phase, which began this May.

The six-month test phase is estimated to be eliminating 27t (30 tons) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions.

Reductions of 272t (300 tons) of CO2eq emissions are expected each year if the biofuel is used across all of Nestlé Waters’ fleet.

Commenting on the activity, Marco Banchelli, supply chain manager for Nestlé Waters Zone AOA, said: "This is the first time that we are using a biodiesel blend in our region, as we continue to investigate new alternative solutions to further reduce our environmental impact."
