Ireland set to introduce E10 blending next year

April 20, the Republic of Ireland’s Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment published a policy statement ratio of biofuel to fossil fuel will be upped to 10% from 2019, increasing to 11% in 2020.

Petrol in Ireland currently contains 8% bioethanol. All EU members are obligated to enforce E10 blending by 2020 under the Renewable Energy Directive.

The Department reports that a key theme of the responses from public consultation, opened in December 2017, was the need to provide certainty to industry and stakeholders to facilitate longer term planning for future blending obligations.

After 2020, the Department said that it will work with industry to overcome the ‘blend wall’ (the blending ratio at which some cars experience technical difficulty) to increase the blending ratio further.

Public consultation on 12 l;ending and the introduction of an advanced biofuels obligation after 2022 will be opened in 2019. Compressed natural gas (CNG), liquid natural gas (LNG) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO, a drop-in biodiesel) are also being considered as alternative fuels to reduce emissions in the transport sector.
